Stuff We Adore: Wiener Werkstätte Ceramics

“Better to work 10 days on one product than to manufacture 10 products in one day.” Wiener Werkstätte motto

I was going to post a blog about an obsession of ours Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops)..  A large community of artists and designers working in Vienna from 1903 thought to the early 1930’s.  Who’s main aim was to resist mass production and industrialization.

I originally intended to start with there textile and clothing designs as they are mind blowing, way, way ahead of their time and one of the things we would collect if we could afford to.

However our darling daughter Chromium Dumb Belle has been feeling a little glum and its kind of hard to give her a hug when she is 5000 miles away.  So i thought I would start with their ceramics as I just know there will be a few pieces she hasn’t seen that she will just adore…. hopefully this will make up for the rubbish emails I send her when she is feeling a little down.

Wish this was in colour, have spent ages imagining what colours the wall paper would be.

The wallpaper in the second photo blew me away, never seen anything like it.
Some very appealing pieces there, must find out a bit more about the Wiener Werkstaette.

Your stall at Woodbridge was fantastic, I had a good look through everything with my daughter. Love the above subject I am a great fan, I studied the group when I was at Colchester Institute and based a whole paper dress project around their ideals. The third statue down reminds me of the patterns by Alice Natter (I think i’ve got that right) I can’t remember exactly I think she worked with Fortuny i’ll have to look it up.
